Tribune Staff Report
Indiana state Sen. Tom Weatherwax, R-Logansport, announced earlier this week that he won’t seek re-election in 2008, ending a 24-year career in the Statehouse.
Weatherwax represents Senate District 18, which includes all or parts of Kosciusko, Pulaski, Wabash, Fulton, Cass, Miami and Wabash counties. Senate staffers said Monday that Weatherwax has chaired and served on more committees than any senator in state history.
In a press statement issued Monday, Weatherwax said he wants to focus more on his private life and family.
“I have been blessed with productive careers both in and out of politics,” he said. “I would like to thank my constituents for all of their years of confidence and support and God for the many blessings he has bestowed upon me.”
During the 2008 session, Weatherwax said he is “resolute” about continuing to fight for property tax reform, job-creating measures and school improvement.
Weatherwax was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1984 and became a state senator in 1988. He is a ranking member of the Senate committee on tax and fiscal policy. He also serves on the Senate commerce, public policy and interstate cooperation committee; pension, labor, and appropriations committee.
