STATEHOUSE (Feb. 18, 2010) - Members of the Senate today passed a measure sponsored by State Sen. Tom Wyss (R-Fort Wayne) to safeguard Hoosier veterans’ benefits from being litigated away.
House Bill 1165 passed the Senate by a vote of 48-0, sending the measure to the governor’s desk for signing.
“I sponsored this legislation to help protect Hoosier veterans by securing their disability benefits,” Wyss said. “This measure is already in place on the federal level and we want to make sure state law provides the same safeguards. The passage of this legislation is a victory for our brave Hoosier veterans.”
Under the bill, a veteran’s disability benefit would be protected from a judicial lien, process or proceeding to collect a debt.
“Many veterans, who willingly served their country, suffer physical and mental challenges as a result of their service,” Wyss said. “I believe it is important to help protect these veterans’ disability benefits.”
Wyss represents Senate District 15, which includes a portion of Allen County.
