State Sen. Tom Wyss (R-Fort Wayne), sponsor of the resolution, said the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, Transportation and Veterans Affairs will meet at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24, in the Senate Chamber at the Statehouse.
Currently, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation allowing merchant marines who served during World War II to receive benefits.
“Merchant marines provided crucial support for our armed services during World War II, carrying supplies to our soldiers fighting overseas,” Wyss said. “They sailed hostile waters, often faced the same dangers as military personnel and I believe they should be appropriately rewarded.”
Under the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, the crews of vessels owned by American companies that sailed under the U.S. flag were considered military personnel in wartime. During World War II, merchant mariners were responsible for delivering food, medical supplies and armaments to American and allied forces.
According to some estimates, more than 215,000 American merchant marines served during World War II, incurring thousands of casualties.
“If the Senate passes this resolution, the state’s federal delegation will be contacted and notified of state lawmakers’ support,” Wyss said.
